Strange Material is a printhouse in Ōtepoti Dunedin that specializes in risography, founded 2025. Our capabilities include Riso printing, trimming, booklet binding, and more. As a co-operative company, we provide these services both to the public and to our member artists & designers.
We like off-white paper, do-it-yourself zines, post-capitalist economies, ink smudges, hot pink, electric blue, the sound of a spinning Risograph drum, gig posters, protest art, fan art, stickers, and slow artistic processes. This list is not exhaustive.

- Ash McFarlane is a graphic designer who works in both print and digital mediums. Since graduating in 2025, he has become a prolific name in Ōtepoti's music & alternative scenes, including for his Risograph-printed zine Stapled Noise. Riso Basics
Developed by Riso Kagaku Corporation in the mid 1980's, Risograph Duplicators are like automated screen-printing machines. They print with vegetable-based ink in a limited selection of spot colours, which differ from one printshop to another.
Risography works as follows. First, your work is scanned or sent from a computer as a grayscale image [1]. The image is then burned into a special piece of stencil paper called a master [2], which is wrapped around the ink-filled print drum [3]. The drum spins at high speed, forcing ink through the master [4] and onto paper which is passed underneath [5]. Thus, the image is reproduced on paper in the chosen ink colour. To use a second colour in the same print, the drum is swapped out and the paper fed back through for another layer.
